臨床疫学は、臨床の問題を扱うという点で極めて臨床的であると同時に、疫学の手法を用いるという点で極めて公衆衛生的です。医学の国際的潮流であるEBM(Evidence-based medicine, 根拠に基づく医療）を実践する基盤となる学問領域として、その重要性は増大する一方です。
また、超高齢社会のもとでの医療資源の制約と医療の効率化の社会的要請を背景として、医療経済学の重要性はかつてないほど広く認識されるに至っています。
臨床は個々の患者の生命を救い健康を回復維持することが主眼です。一方、経済学では社会全体での最適な資源配分のあるべき姿を議論します。両者はそのアプローチの方法こそ違いますが、人々の幸福を実現することを目指すという根本的な目的部分では通底します。
本学の公共健康医学専攻(SPH)における教育の目的は、専門性と公共性を兼ね備えた公衆衛生のプロを養成することです。中でも臨床疫学・経済学を実践する専門家の育成は国家的急務であるといえるでしょう。
本分野は、疫学と経済学という背景の異なる２つの数量的分析手法と関連の社会科学的理論を裏付けとし、境界領域的な応用学問分野として、実証データに基づいた研究と実践・教育を志向しています。

!日本版診断群分類（Diagnosis Procedure Combination, DPC）に基づくナショナル・データベースの整備とその活用
本講座スタッフは厚生労働科学研究のDPC 研究班のメンバーとして、DPCデータのマネージメントとその高度利用を担っております。具体的には、DPC研究班が集める毎年約700万件の退院症例データを蓄積するデータベースを構築し、管理・運営するシステムを確立しています。
さらに国内の各領域の研究者と連携し、DPCデータを用いた臨床疫学研究、ヘルス・サービス・リサーチ、医療経済・政策研究を推進しております。

!教育
東京大学大学院医学系研究科公共健康医学専攻（SPH)では、臨床疫学講義、保健医療経済学講義、医療技術評価学演習および臨床疫学・経済学演習を担当しています。
臨床疫学研究のテーマは、日常臨床の中に潜んでいます。Clinical practiceからresearch questionを紡ぎ出し、研究仮説を立て、適切なデザインを構築し、利用可能なデータから意味のある分析結果を出し、臨床的に妥当な解釈を行います。臨床疫学講義では、これら一連のプロセスを遂行するために不可欠となる臨床疫学の理論および実践的な方法論を身につけます。
保健医療経済学講義では、医療経済学の基礎を身につけた上で、医療経済学の考え方や理論について理解を深めてもらいます。医療技術評価学演習では、医療技術の有効性評価および費用効果分析について実践的な知識と技術を身につけます。
臨床疫学・経済学演習では、学生各人が具体的な臨床的関心あるいは公衆衛生学的関心に基づき、研究のproposal writingができる実践的なスキルを身につけます。さらに医学英語論文の書き方の基本を学びます。
